How Water Hydration Can Help You

Our body contains 60 to 70% of water. It becomes very important for us to maintain this level at all times to stay healthy. And especially when you are exercising, sweating can reduce the water content in our bodies considerably. Hence, it becomes essential to determine the amount of water intake for the proper hydration of our bodies.

How Much Water Is Required Per Day?

Water is necessary for a healthy body. It is responsible for the vital functions of your body, like metabolism, digestion, etc. Experts have provided with varied views as to the amount of water that should be consumed each day by a person. This quantity varies according to the amount of work you are doing, the number of exercises, and even your food habits and diet.

For example, an athlete loses considerable amount of water and essential salts through sweating and perspiration. This requires them to drink more water and other fluids that contain salts like sodium and other minerals. Lack of water can cause dehydration, which can lower the energy levels considerably, reduce proper metabolism, and result in weakness.

Too much water can cause unwanted results too. Hyponatremia can result when water is consumed in large quantities, more than required, where the sodium levels in the body gets reduced, causing nausea, muscle cramps, disorientation, slurred speech, etc. Hence it becomes very important to determine the correct amount of fluids required by our body.

We tend to lose water through urine, perspiration, bowel movements and even through our breath. The idea is to keep up to the normal water content in our body by restoring the amount of water lost. This is sometimes termed as the Replacement Approach.

Normally we will eliminate 1.5 liters of water through urination. The other factors make you lose another liter of water. Food generally provides you with 20% of the water lost. The rest should be consumed as plain water or fluids. This amounts to approximately 8 cups a day. Hence, experts suggest that consuming 8 glasses (8 ounces each) of water and fluids can provide proper water hydration for the body.

Some other effective methods to stay away from dehydration are drinking a glass of water with each meal and in between the meals. Consume enough fluids both before and after exercises. At parties and social gatherings, try to opt for sparkling water instead of alcoholic drinks. These can result in proper water hydration, and help you to maintain a healthy and fit body, and increase immunity against diseases.
